HPP ‘Piva’ - 42 years of a successful operation

HPP Piva generated 365 GWh in the first quarter of 2018, i.e. 22% more than planned for this period of the year. 48.67% of the total annual plan has been accomplished. Such result was achieved thanks to good operating readiness and engagement of all employees, especially of the Sector for maintenance and exploitation that utilized to the maximum good hydrological conditions of December of the last year as well as of first three months of this year. Given the current inflow and the level in reservoirs, this will for sure be one of the successful years of HPP Piva in terms of electricity generation.

Due to an unprecedented dry weather, the total generation by HPP Piva in 2017 amounted to 360 GWh, or 48% of the annual plan, what has already been exceeded.

On March 28th, HPP Piva celebrated 42 years of existence. HPP Piva has generated 31 705 574 MWh of electricity so far and thus gave a strong impulse to stability and functioning of Montenegrin energy system.

Piva is a high hydro power plant with the highest concrete arch dam in the world with artificial reservoir. HPP Piva reservoir is 40 km long with useful reservoir volume that equals to 746 Mm3. As a run-of-the-river plant with huge useful reservoir’s capacity, HPP Piva is a flexible source of energy and power. Due to the specific terrain’s topography characteristics the entire plant was constructed underground. It can be used at any time for any need of power system in full capacity of available water in the reservoir.
