TPP Pljevlja celebrates 32 years of operation

Thermal Power Plant Pljevlja generated its first kilowatt hours (kWh) exactly 32 years ago, on October 21, 1982. 980 GWh of electricity delivered this year (95% of the plan) corroborate the strategic importance of TPP Pljevlja for stability of the Montenegrin energy system.  Since its commissioning, TPP Pljevlja generated cca 30 000 GWh of electricity.

Generation results coupled with a successful general overhaul give reasons for satisfaction and characterise this 32nd year of operation as prosperous, according to Mr Luka Jovanović, the director of TPP Pljevlja. ‘More than three decades later, this plant continues to uphold the position of a pillar of the energy system. Seeing the electricity market demand and reliable operating of the plant, we expect generation plan to be met this year’, Mr Jovanović says.

The significance of TPP Pljevlja for stability of the Montenegrin energy system is notably visible during hydrologically unfavourable years. Such was the year of 2011 when this plant generated the record of 1,452 GWh and met the unprecedented 34.4% of the overall electricity demand in Montenegro.

The past decade is also prominent from the standpoint of €50 million worth of investments in TPP Pljevlja which brought about excellent effects in terms of increase of plant’s reliability as well as of annual generation. With the final reconstruction of electrostatic precipitator in TPP Pljevlja, which has been completed four years ago, the particle concentration in flue gasses has decreased to mere 20-25 mg/m3, i.e. significantly below the EU standards that envisage the limit values of 50 mg/3.

This year’s investments represent continuation of a valuable investment cycle and additionally confirm responsibility of business operating of TPP Pljevlja as well as a deep commitment to solving problems in the area of environmental protection.

“EPCG and TPP “Pljevlja” have been continuously engaged in neutralizing the potentially negative environmental impacts of the existing ash and slag landfill. An important project, 8.2 million of € worth, will be implemented by the end of the year, by which the absolute stability of Maljevac dam will be achieved. As a result of constant investments, EPCG reduced the negative impacts to the minimum, which is confirmed by the fact that dust dispersing areas were reduced by 80%, which is also proved by data of Eco-Toxicological Institute and Reports of the World Bank. Works on rehabilitation of the main pipeline of reservoirs “Otilovići” – TPP “Pljevlja” have recently been finalized, while the value of the Project amounted to € 1,600,000” Luka Jovanović stated.

Thermal Power Plant currently has 208 employees, who, through the responsible work-related attitude, provide their contribution to reliable operation of this strategically vital energy facility for Montenegro.

“TPP Pljevlja employees represent a group of hardworking and responsible people who guarantee a good and certain future of the Thermal Power Plant and Pljevlja in general, as Montenegrin base of thermal energy potential. I have to point out that I am extremely honored and pleased by the fact that I am part of this group and that I have the opportunity to cooperate with the exceptional people such as employees of TPP “Pljevlja” Jovanovic said.

In the following period, Elektroprivreda Crne Gore will strive to continuously improve operation through investments into projects which will increase the generation capacity of the Power Plant and contribute to prosperity of the town and enhancement of life comfort for each citizen of Pljevlja.
